Electricity update, we got power back on this morning around 9a.m. when I started the gennie on Monday 4:30a.m. it had 2.4 hours on it, I have had it 2 years btw, when I shut it off this morning it had 100.5 hours. We probably on had 5 inches total snow in the 2 storms, maybe 3/8" ice. In 2014 winter we had 14" stacked up in our back yard. I took a 2x2 and screwed it to a 2x8 and put marks on it with marker where I could look out and not have to guess how much snow we had. I have seen plenty of snow in my days and it may be pretty, but it wears off real quick. I ask that everyone that is a praying person, say a prayer for those without power and for all those guys that are working hard in some nasty cold conditions to get it back on line ASAP. As of this morning UCEMC had 3,000 houses in Overton county and 5,000 in Putnam county without power.

I'm in the camp of the smaller capacity generators (2200W-ish) rather than the larger capacity ones that will power most, if not all, of the house. The larger generators are more of a "fuel hog" than the smaller generators. I'm of the mindset, I'd rather have a more limited amount of power for a longer period of time, than more power than I would likely need in an emergency, for a shorter period of time. Mine is a converted tri-fuel unit. In the event the power is off, I'm going to be in conservation mode so my energy requirements will be on the minimal side. Cooking will be done with propane. Heat would be with gas logs, assuming the natural gas is still on, propane if it's not. I have some solar capability as well. I guess I'm somewhat okay with my current situation, it could always be better, but I find I can sleep at night at this point.

995 fan here. Thousands of rounds, accurate and reliable. Solid 9mm PCC. Have 2 - 20 round Red Ball mags, few hundred rounds, no issues. Easy to reload with 10 round mags, which are still currently legal in most US states. Down side is it is heavy. I added a HTA bullpup stock to mine and it's 9#+ For $200+ more, there are better options if weight and common mag availability is a concern. According to the internet, 16" barrel gets you about +200fps. It's still a pistol bullet. If you're concerned about range folk talk about exploding, self discharging HPs, eff 'em. SIght it in, keep in moderately clean and lubricated, then ring steel at 25 to 50 yards 10/10 times with no malfunctions.

I went the other way. I have plenty of 30 rd mags that are still in the original packaging. I have a few 10 and 20 round mags because I like my guns loaded in the safe and the shorter mags store easier (regular mags are on the safe shelf to grab). I decided it would be a good idea to have a few more 10 round mags just in case. I think I may be right because a lot of 10 round mags were out of stock already, mine should be here next week, had to pick my second choice of manufacturer and color.

I’ve seen a few more reports of child fatalities and near fatal accidents around the state. Be careful y’all. Don’t mix powered vehicles with sleds and take extra caution around formerly liquid bodies of water. I also had a friend slip on the ice and break his shoulder and now he will be out of work for 3-4 months. I grew up in this (dad was stationed in South Dakota for 8 years) so I’m not telling y’all to be terrified of the snow and ice and stay inside. Go out and make memories with the kids and grandkids! Not to belabor the point too much, but bear with me. In 1997 if you only had 10 mags and a preban mag was $100+, then rebuilding magazines was a reasonable option. In 2020 when you can buy single magazines for as little as $10-12, or have 100 magazine cases drop shipped to your house for $8-900, there’s no reason to spend the same amount on rebuild kits. Don’t overthink it, just buy more mags. This is mostly focused on AR mags, but Glock mags are cheap and readily available right now as well. Most damage that renders a magazine unusable is to the body itself. It isn’t the follower or spring wearing out. It’s the body cracking, denting, or feed lips deforming in some way. Buy more mags. If you have guns with expensive mags, buy one or two as you can. If they’re out of stock, set up alerts with the various retail sites. (Gunmagwarehouse.com) Buy more mags.

If you’re running pmags, just buy more lots more pmags now while they are still cheap. If you’re running USGI mags, do the same. If you’re running another brand of AR mag, buy a bunch of pmags or USGI mags while they are still cheap. A new mag is always a superior option to a rebuilt mag.

How many you need per gun depends on how much you shoot and the manner/type of shooting and what you see the future availability of mags being. If you talk about shooting more than you do it you don't need many mags. You will never wear them out and the chance of damage is low if you take empty mags out to put on a bench/table and then reload. If, however, you are putting a high round count down range and dropping mags on the ground (dirt, mud, concrete, and varied surfaces) during mag changes you will eventually wear mag components out or damage them and will need to replace them. To many people treat magazines like a pet and can not bring themselves to put them down. I see this most with military guys who want to continue to run mags they deployed with. There is nothing wrong with that if they work but once they start compromising reliability they have to go. Some guys have a hard time with that. If you see future availability as an issue buy more than you think you need. Mags are cheap. Buy plenty and replace as needed.

A number of years ago I took evening welding classes at McGavock High School through a Nashville Continuing Education program. It was cheap, like $50 for a 5 or 6 week program, plus a book if I recall. I can't find anything similar now. Most of the TCAT campuses offer Welding Technology programs but that may be more involved than you are looking for. I think it is a 12 month program. I am just a home fabricator and tinkerer. I would like to get into doing some GTAW (TIG) welding in the near future but for now I just run SMAW and GMAW/FCAW on Lincoln equipment. Most recent purchase was a cheap plasma cutter and boy do I love that thing.

I have a Glock 30sf and it's my favorite of all the Glocks, I guess that's why I bought one. Very accurate and dependable pistol. Never tried the Hipoint carbine but I have a Ruger PC carbine and it would be a great home defense also. The Glock can double as home defense and concealed carry would be a good reason to go with it.

I did some reading on this a while back and wanted CB/10 meter capable mobile and for a home base unit. Best for the money is the Anytone AT 6666. Its a real power house with 12-45 watts. 11 meter CB convertable with button selectable CB or HF band. Hammers hate this for its way over 4 watt legal limit abilities. I want the thing for SHTF days so who gives a rats butt about power when the Gov is broke. Side band is good to have just to listen in on 10m ham any way. Having the extra power in CB for local communication is imperative IMO. 4 watts is not worth having in hilly country. I'v not set this up as a base yet but have most of the stuff to do it. While I like his explanation of what 41F is, that does not (in my opinion) cover very much of the benefits of a trust. Yes, many people used trusts before 41F mainly for the benefit of avoiding fingerprints and passport photos. But there are many benefits of using a trust that have nothing to do with tax stamp application process. That video doesn't address those, likely because it was not intended to state "why a trust is no longer the benefit it used to be." That majority of benefits still exist and really the only one that disappeared with 41F is avoiding the fingerprints and passport photo requirements. I have run into many instances where having a trust would be highly beneficial beyond the issue of getting the tax stamp. 1. Possession by Trustees - this has been covered many times, so I won't go into detail here. However, I am personally aware of several instances in Middle TN where someone has come into contact with LE (traffic stops, call to DCS, etc) when the individual tax stamp holder was not present, but the NFA item was. This could be particularly important for individuals who travel regularly and leave the NFA item (i) in the house with someone else (like a spouse) or (ii) in the possession of someone else (which happens regularly with deployed military personnel). 2. Passing NFA Items to Younger Generation - this has been covered and I won't go into detail here. 3. Simplicity after Death - a will typically works, but does your will deal with the possibility of a beneficiary who is not legally eligible to possess the NFA item. You might be surprised how often this happens. Also, NFA items cannot be easily divided, so if you have (for example) 3 NFA items and 2 beneficiaries, who gets what? NFA trusts generally take care of this issue. 4. What if You become an Ineligible Person (temporarily or permanently) - This one has come up several times. An older gentleman had a WWII battlefield "trophy" he registered with the ATF in 1986 (no trust, though). A few years ago, he had a conservator appointed over him, making him ineligible to possess firearms. Since he hadn't passed away, the NFA item could not just be passed on to his son (who obviously wanted it). In addition, the gentleman's conservator could not legally possess it, either (and she wasn't "gun friendly). The item had to be destroyed or sold. Similar issue has arisen in several divorce proceedings lately, with the husband having an Order of Protection issued against him. When that happened, husband was ineligible and there was no one to take possession while the Order still existed. Several people have had to sell or destroy NFA items under these circumstances. If a trust had been in place, the ineligible person could have been removed as a trustee and another trustee could have possessed the item. These are just a few of the odd circumstances where a trust is better than individual ownership. We would love for the previous benefits to still exist, too, but there are still many benefits of a trust.

Chattanooga had 22-inches of snow in March, 1993. The same storm dumped 5 feet of snow on Newfound Gap and Mount Leconte in the Smokies. The blizzard of 1951 was one of Nashville's worst storms.

I've had primers go off when using a Lee Loader, and while it made it jump, it didn't do any harm. I'm going to have to check back in a day or so and see if anyone bought the guy's stock of blanks. I'd have to be pretty desperate to go to so much trouble.

Agree. I hate it when one accident like this turns into "No one should ever do this again and it should be illegal" talk. We did a lot of dumb things when I was kid growing up in Illinois where at that time we did get plenty of snow. 99.9% of the time, nothing happens. That .1% or less is unfortunate, but bad things happen every day. That's part of life.

Hey, you forgot the token Hispanic! I can see both sides of this; on one hand I am all about getting more people into the shooting sports, self defense and defense of our Constitution. But at the same time, I can see making them feel the pain of exercising one of our basic rights due to the people they put into office making it so. Maybe if they start seeing what we have been made to put up with all these years, then maybe they will start to see what the consequences are when they vote the way they do.

No doubt that my Browning Safari Grade in 375 is a great caliber. It is also a safe queen. That 375 is rather spendy to feed. LOL

I was on another gunsite and Pm'ed a guy from Mississippi that claimed his LGS had gotten a big shipment of primers last week. He said that the store had kept some in the back and were limiting purchases to 200 primers. Then about a week later they got 100K of CCI srp and 100K Federal spp. They were selling for $69.95/1k with limit 1k. Just to let ya'll know that some stores are getting something. That is a little re-assuring.

Another thought- after the last panic I invested in some spare magpul followers and springs to keep my existing mags running that much longer (hope I never need them).

Get the marlin. And I’m telling you with 100% certainty the 30-30 is a stone cold killer of hogs. I use a 160grn ftx bullet and it has NEVER failed to deliver.
